Jhalana Leopard Conservation Reserve, Jaipur
Jhalana Leopard Conservation Reserve is India’s first leopard reserve, located in Jaipur, Rajasthan, covering about 20-23 sq km surrounded by the Aravalli hills.
The reserve became officially designated as a leopard conservation area in 2017 and opened for safari tours in 2016.
It hosts a healthy population of 30-40 leopards, including cubs, and other wildlife like striped hyenas, jungle cats, desert foxes, jackals, sambar, chital, and nilgai.
Safari tours are conducted in open jeeps (gypsies) with expert guides, offering high chances of spotting leopards as they are diurnal and accustomed to safari vehicles.
Jhalana’s terrain features dry deciduous forests, sharp cliffs, and valleys dominated by flora such as prosopis juliflora and khejri trees.
Best time to visit is November to April, although the reserve is open year-round for safaris including monsoon months.
It is easily accessible from Jaipur city and airport, making it a convenient wildlife escape for visitors.
Safari timings vary seasonally, typically including morning and afternoon slots, with prices around INR 1350-2750 per person and full gypsy rentals.
Other attractions nearby include the historic Shikaar Audi hunting lodge within the reserve, and Jaipur’s famous forts and palaces.
